Marking Scissors

There are two different groups of Scissors watermarks in the Leicester and Arundel Codices. Representing Group A is Arundel 273-276, and representing Group B is Arundel 42-43. Each Scissor image is marked with 15 points. The watermark should be oriented with the the outer corner in the left blade higher than the outer corner in the right blade (which can be determined by using the laid lines).

Point Locations:
  1. highest point on left handle
  2. highest point on right handle
  3. top intersection of scissors and vertical chain line bisecting watermark
  4. downward tip point of left handle
  5. point closest to vertical chain line bisecting watermark in the inden- tation of transition of left handle to left blade
  6. point closest to vertical chain line bisecting watermark in the inden- tation of transition of right handle to right blade
  7. downward tip point of left handle
  8. intersection of inner edges of blades and vertical chain line bisecting watermark
  9. outer corner in left blade
  10. outer corner in right blade
  11. intersection of twelfth laid line (which is fatter than most) above laid line just touching bottom of right blade and inner edge of left blade
  12. intersection of twelfth laid line (which is fatter than most) above laid line just touching bottom of right blade and chain line bisecting watermark
  13. intersection of twelfth laid line (which is fatter than most) above laid line just touching bottom of right blade and inner edge of right blade
  14. bottom tip of left blade
  15. bottom tip of right blade

Marked Scissors for Group A representative Arundel 273-276

Marked Scissors for Group B representative Arundel 42-43. Points 11, 12, and 13 should be skipped if the laid lines to be counted are clearly visible.

Other Scissors Watermarks

There are two other Scissors watermarks in the Codices, Arundel 147-148 and Arundel 271-278. We now show that both are in Group A.
